Guidelines for Presenters

Seminars will last for 90 minutes and be grouped in clusters of two or three, each paper lasting for approximately 20 minutes and involving discussion and/or other appropriate participant activity as an important element of the session. Seminars may present findings of research or work in progress, describe evaluations of innovative practice, provide conceptual overviews. Formal presentation should leave time for discussion and questions. The seminar will close with a general discussion to draw together the themes and issues raised in the seminar.

Workshops will be either 45 or 90 minutes long with the emphasis on delegate participation and interaction. Workshops may explore theoretical or practical issues, demonstrate processes used in practice or provide an opportunity to share the diverse experiences of the participants, perhaps leading to a future activity or output. A mixture of individual, small group and plenary activity may be accompanied by more limited amount of formal presentation.

Symposia will last 90 minutes and comprise a short introduction by the convenor and 10 - 15 minute presentations by the three contributors, leaving around 45 minutes for discussion and summing-up. A symposium might be used to present contrasting approaches to, or perspectives on, theory, concepts or practice in probation practice. Symposia may be proposed by you as a group of colleagues submitting a proposal or may be clustered by the Organising Committee upon receipt of a number of papers on similar themes.

Posters should be self-explanatory. Limit the amount of detail you include on the poster and support it with handouts and other resources. Ensure that the print on the poster is legible from a reading distance of 1-2 metres. Use diagrams, charts and pictures to illustrate your material. Sessions will be put aside for these to be displayed and discussion with conference participants. A group such as a probation area; a study group; a group of practitioners working in the same area etc may wish to submit a co-ordinated set of posters and please indicate in the proposal form if this is so.
